数字を使った慣用表現 

今回は数字を使った慣用句（idiom）をお伝えしていきます。私は英語学習の中でも、慣用句の勉強が特に楽しいと感じています。そして英語をマスターする上で、欠かせないものでもあります。いかにたくさんの慣用句を理解し使えるかで、他の人との英語力の差もつきますし、よりネイティブに近い英語表現ができるようになります。

慣用句もさまざまな表現があり、身体の一部、動物、食べ物、家、自然、数字などを使用したものがあります。以前、このメルマガで食べ物を使用した慣用句を紹介しました。今回はビジネスシーンでも活用できる数字を使用したものをお伝えしていきます。

1．have second thoughts　：　考え直す／思い直す／気が変わる
　　ex. Taro is having second thoughts about quitting his job.
　　　（太郎は仕事を辞めることを考え直している。）

2．back to square one　：　振り出しに戻る／一からやり直す
　　ex. We spent so much time for this project, but now it's back to square one because of the tight budget.
　　　（このプロジェクトのために多くの時間を費やしたが、予算が厳しいため、一からやり直しになった。）

3．a dime a dozen　：　10セントで1ダース分買えるほど安価なもの／簡単に手に入るもの／ありふれたもの
　　ex. I thought this new product that we made was something original but it was acutaly a dime a dozen.
　　　（我々が作った新しい商品は斬新なものだと思ったが、実はありふれたものであった。）

4．once in a blue moon　：　滅多にない
　　ex. I have business trip once in a blue moon.
　　　（出張はほとんどない。）

5．of two minds　：　決心がつかない／迷っている
　　ex. I'm of two minds about whether to change my job or not.
　　　（転職をするかどうかで迷っている。）

6．one in a million　：　百万に一つの＜もの＞／百万に一人
　　ex. I respect my boss because he is very talented. He is one in a million.
　　　（上司はとても優秀で尊敬しています。彼は百万人に一人の逸材です。）

7．as easy as one-two- three　：　1、2、3を数えるようにとても簡単なこと
　　ex. This negotiation will be as easy as one-two-three because I have done the same thing before.
　　　（以前にも同じ交渉をしたことがあるので、この交渉もとても簡単にできるであろう。）

8．forty winks　：　うたたね／仮眠
　　ex. I need forty winks because I watched the world cup till 3am last night.
　　　（昨日は夜中の3時までW杯を観ていたので、仮眠が必要だ。）
